Paris' Worst Kept Secret - Monoprix

image: https://iconape.com

Monoprix is more than just a grocery store in Paris (and all of France) - it's a way of life. It stands as a delightful blend of everyday essentials, mixed with and modern classics of useful lifestyle items. Whether you are looking for fresh produce, gourmet ingredients, fashionable home decor, or even the latest style, Monoprix has something for everyone. Let's take an (unsponsored) P'Niche peek to learn more about this shoppers' haven...

Believe it or not, Monoprix was founded (in 1932) outside of Paris, in Rouen, by one Monsieur Max Heilbronn. Heilbronn was the son in law of Monsieur Theophile Bader, the mind behind the luxury retailer Galeries Lafayette.

Heilbronn, however, focused on offering "quality goods and fine items in the city center," with affordable pricing being a focal point, rather than jaw dropping price tags in a Depression era economy.

Moving quickly through the decades, Monoprix made quick adaptations to shoppers' needs and wishes.

In fact, Monoprix is one of the few stores / chains in France that will open for full (or nearly full) operating hours on a Sunday - an incredibly unusual occurrence in France.

Through out the years, they have grown so quickly that they were able to devour several of their competitors, namely, the giant, Prisunic in 1997.

Speaking of devouring, noting that 70% of French consumers prefer shopping organic, Monoprix has made great strides in offering fresh produce and dairy, sourced from local farms and dairies.

Monoprix further taps into this natural demand by showcasing environmentally friendly items, thus reducing transportation emissions, while also supporting nearby farmers. This focus on sustainability and health attracts customers who prioritize these values in their shopping habits.

In keeping with the food theme, Monoprix also carries tons of pre-made foods for your grab and go needs. You can stock a well timed picnic, full family dinner, or even a heavenly apéro!

You can also visit their "little sister" locations for food only items. These are called "Monop'" or "Monop' Daily" and can be found all over town - truly on nearly every other street and/or corner.

In fact, recent marketing studies show that Monoprix' private-label products often match or even exceed national brands, making them affordable, while maintaining high standards and eco-friendly packaging.

For instance, some Monoprix label organic products reportedly save consumers up to 30% compared to other organic brands.

Their Insta-worthy marketing with word play is also genius. And fun! They take themselves seriously without taking themselves too seriously...

Monoprix has also delved into the hyper competitive world of beauty, skincare, and cosmetics. Their health and beauty section boasts a diverse selection of skincare products, ranging from luxury brands to natural alternatives. Monoprix' Health & Beauty supplies respond to the increasing consumer awareness of holistic health and now accounts for 15% of Monoprix's sales figures. Just don't look for medical needs - you'll still need to visit your French pharmacie for those items!

Moving over to the clothing sections (for men, women, and children), Monoprix offers comfortable outfits and stylish accessories, appealing to varied aesthetics and lifestyles. Shoes and accessories of all types can be found here as well, and they really will stand the test - quality is still at the forefront of production, regardless of the easy price tag.

In fact, Monoprix is becoming more and more popular for their organically sourced cashmere goods every year. My Monoprix cashmere sweaters are softer and hold up better than many designer brands I've had. Monoprix (and P'Niche) for the win here!

Their expansive home decor section features trendy items that can enhance any living space - particularly those in the busy city center.

In fact, so beloved is the Monoprix home good selection that they have been able to open several free standing stores dedicated to home goods offerings. You can furnish and entire apartment with the items curated at Monoprix Maison.

Keeping up with the modern consumer times, Monoprix has enhanced its digital presence with a aesthetically pleasing Instagram account, where they showcase their great items - and prices - all set to enhance the customer experience.

Monoprix offers an online shopping platform, for those P'Nichers lucky enough to stay long term in France, through their downloadable mobile app.

If you are lucky enough to be able to stay longer term, don't forget to apply for a member's discount card (loyalty program). it will ping you with seasonal selections, as well as unlocking exclusive discounts and personalized promotions. It's so worth it!

These days, as well, many short term visitors flock to Monoprix for souvenirs to bring back to friends and family. The most (and wildly) popular item is the Nylon reusable tote bag.

Y'all, people are booking flights with the sole purpose of getting this bag. People are so desperate to acquire one, they are even showing up in shops like Etsy, Poshmark, etc. So revere chic that it hurts!

There are fun tutorials on YouTube telling you how to best fold your bag to preserve it (P'Niche simply cannot make this merde up).

There is even a larger (and more durable) option, which I use as my airline carry on (it carries everything and can fit under the seat!) I love the cheeky winks I get from the Air France flight attendants, feeling like part of the "cool kid Monoprix inner circle/club."

Ready to check out Monoprix for yourself? Wonderful! You can use the store location guide found on their main website.

You can also peruse their playful Instagram account or simply download the app from your local app source.

Make sure to check local times for your shopping ease...

So what say, P'Nicher, will we cross paths in our local Monoprix during a fun shopping jaunt? (if you're searching, I am prolly in either the cookie or cheese aisles). Let us know in the comments et à bientôt!

Great article Chrissy! I love Monoprix. I purchased a darling Mariner dress for my great-niece and a beautiful little Mariner sweater for her. It is a great place to pick up gifts for friends!
